BRMS PTSA Meetings, Agendas & Minutes BRMS PTSA Meeting Minutes – Thursday, March 25, 2010 Meeting started 9:37 a.m. Michael Pero, Principal, opened with a humorous story about his son’s teddy bear parade and made a connection for us on how we can best support our children in school. He reviewed the end-of-year exam schedule. He reminded us to be relaxed about state assessments. Our children are prepared for them and they do not require additional studying. Reassure your children of this. Our children just need to be well rested and do their best. The results are not part of their grade. The regents test scores are not a part of their final average either. It is a numeric score. Mr. Pero provided an overview to a new Transition to Middle School program that BRMS is adopting. It is a leadership program in which 40 to 50 seventh grade students, who will reflect the demographics of the student population, will be chosen to participate. The students who participate in the leadership training will be assigned to approximately eight sixth grade students in the fall. They will be responsible for 90% of the sixth graders orientation to the school and then will provide a mentoring relationship to these (8) sixth graders throughout the year. The idea is to help with the transition to middle school as well as reduce the possibility of teasing and bullying, promote teambuilding and increase trust among the BRMS population. This program has been successful in other school districts in the nation and has really made a difference in these ways. The 7th graders will have an assembly in which the program and application process will be explained to them. This will not add to the students time commitments since their time with their sixth grade group will be during the school hours. Please show up and VOTE on the school budget. It is important. It was passed by a slim margin last year. The vote is Tuesday MAY 18 at BRMS Mr. Pero pointed out during discussion that Pittsford is not as reliant on state funding and therefore not as adversely affected by cuts as other school districts. There will be a joint PTSA/ BRMS fundraiser for Haiti to help Josh’s mother rebuild her home. Encouraging kids to donate during week of April 5 – April 9. Will collect during lunch. ALL students names (whether they donate or not) will be put in a drawing for prizes. For every dollar students donate they are given an additional chance in the drawing (their name is added again to the hat). Mr. Pero thanks parents again for the great kids they are sending to BRMS. Thank you for your support. 10:15 PCSD Website www.pittsfordschools.org -- Nancy Wayman, Director, Communications – Presented on a new aspect of the District web site dedicated to parents.
