Thornell Road School PTSA Meeting Minutes
May 20, 2010
Sue Lawler called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and introduced our new principal, Mr. Roger DeBell, whose first day at Thornell was April 16.
Principal’s Report- Roger DeBell: Mr. DeBell expressed his enthusiasm for the children and parents of Thornell Road. There is a great synergy that goes on at school. In his new position as principal, he is really looking forward to working with the children and their families.
Student Placement Forms for 2010/2011- Mrs. Canfield, Third Grade Teacher: Mrs. Canfield discussed the student placement forms for the next school year. The review of the student placement forms begins in May, and continues throughout the summer. The teachers work very hard to make the fit for each student a successful one. It is not an easy task, and it takes several times of review to get this process done. The placements for the next school year are mailed in the middle of August to account for any new students coming in through the summer.
Old Business
It was approved to retract the construction paper offer to the school and replace with AccuCut items, for the same amount ($75).
Committee Reports
Teacher Appreciation: Teacher Appreciation Day went very well. Karlee Bolanos and Sherri Lauver want to thank all of the parents that made this day special for everyone. Teachers and staff members were very appreciative of the day’s events, which included breakfast items, lunch, and desserts.
Spring Carnival: The date for the Carnival is Friday, June 11th from 6-9 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with games. There is a great shortage in this area. Help is also needed for set up from 4-6 p.m. and clean up from 9-10 p.m. There are going to be 8 people being dunked this year. If you are interested in helping, please contact Holly LeSchander at holly1@senecadata.com.
Book Fair: We profited $2,200 and budgeted for $2,000. We used free books from Scholastic to fund teacher enrichment for this school year (classroom teachers were provided with up to $50 in books for their rooms). It was a very successful spring Book Fair. The book fairs for 2010/2011 school year are scheduled for November and April. Please note, the spring book fair will be before spring break.
Community Service: Kathy Serling, our Community Service Chair, recently organized two projects: 1) can food collection for Save the Children, most likely benefiting Haiti; and 2) used sneaker collection to recycle them for artificial turf surfaces. Kathy thanks everyone who participated.
New Business
A. Due to parent feedback, Superintendent Price is asking each building PTSA to set a dollar limit on the amount that can be asked of each child for an optional end of year thank you gift to teacher and aide for each classroom. We approved a $5 limit per child. It was also discussed that there is a state policy that limits a gift amount a school employee can accept from an individual ($75). This also applies to a group gift.
