Allen Creek PTSA Meeting Minutes

Thursday, 3/25/2010

9:30 a.m.

Sarah  Open mtg 9:35

Chair Report—a lot of discussion on the budget and the vote on May 18; worries about whether the budget will pass… people need to get out and vote, podcast on District web-site from supt about what’s going on; once it passes the board too late to ask questions.

Mike-- Really impt to vote; get out there and vote and encourage you to go to meeting; informational. Look at what’s going on over time… can be getting more complicated; trying to maintain a quality education; keep thinking about that…  important to think about the whole district; pulling together

Sarah—notes will be sent from PTSA reminding people of the date, importance of supporting the schools; remind people to vote; read it know what’s on it

PTSA needs people to work at the polling area on May 18; three hour shifts; checking people in; each school needs 5 people per school to cover

Enrichment Grants thro the district… still has $2000 available this year… if someone wants to start a project… we have this money, let’s use it

Art Work for Education—opportunity to design cards; box of 12 is $20; $8 of each purchase goes to school; kiosks; kids art work will be in the school; school will get royalties; a little different than Square One; SQ1 has been populat

Pauline Rutberg—SQ1—Grades 1,3,5… many different products; happy to do it next year… should we expand it to all grade levels?

Treasurer’s Report—Sock Hop made $100 more this year; good shape financially

Chess Club—53 students in the Spring, parent volunteers

Yoga— K-3; 27 participants (younger kids); we may need to have other adults

Musical Theater—did a little showcase, some improve, will do it again next year

Jen Latshaw (Julie George)—Teacher Appreciation, 5/4 first Friday in May, doing some kind of a fun apple theme… keep costs down—have $300 to play with; after school activity allows us to have more parental support; come in all together; decorate the MPR; if there’s extra, donate it; mingling social tea; teachers don’t all want to hang out after school… get the info loud and clear quickly… harder to bring food in during the school day

People from the District will come in for Teachers’ Appreciation to check to see that guidelines are being followed; lunch limited to faculty room?  Simple is OK

Coordination w/room mothers…

Teacher Appreciation is the one and only time when you can ask for a contribution from students up to $5; when collecting money, should not be labeled as a holiday gift…  “Apple a Day”

Drop by throughout the day for desserts?  People will come in and out… During the day…

MIKE—student placement and sections; now—3 sections of k, 1, 2,3,4, two sections of 5th grade—but close to adding a third section; doesn’t not change unless a certain number is hit (28); one retirement; new teacher in 2nd grade; 5th grade teacher would go to 4th (don’t know who it is yet, may change); when we have availability w/out internal displacement—posted in the district and teachers by seniority have first dibs; parental input is important—you know your child, what do you think will work for your child; we as a school are getting closer to common best practices/models of instruction—meet the needs of entire class and the individual… teachers, specials, parents… kids change too…

ME—Enrollment Committee

ILT—1/2 day session on starting need to document capstone… common objective of the school…

Cindy—Smiles for Haiti, $1468; primarily student driven; no kids were left out

Sock Hop—made about $100 more this year, thanking parent helpers… profit of a little more than $1000… if parents are aware of their own children—keeping an eye on them… emphasize this as a FAMILY event//parent + child… Mike shouldn’t be the disciplinarian… should there be designated health and safety people in identifiable garb?  There was a shoe area… more signage/awareness next year

Lisa/Cultural Arts—recent events… Freestyle Rep Company—improve for the whole school, fun, received well by the kids, audience participation; The Bully from RCT—game show format—reconsider the notion of bullying, PUSH Physical Theater scheduled after April break

Francis ORoark, visiting author

Book Club—successful program w/82 kids, maybe try non-fiction next year; give it a budget?  Ali will continue w/it last year

Good shape chair-wise for next year:  Box Tops (kid involvement w/cutting the coupons, Girl Scout service project) and Super Sale (District level—in the fall, over by October) chairs needed

Andrea Bornheim will be next year’s co-chair

GREENING AC—Jackie Ebner
